ERV for Bath Exhaust & in Cold Climates: FAIL or WIN from the Ventilation Manufacturers

Corbett Lunsford

Hear it from the people who manufacture fresh air systems, not just from me. ERVs are for very airtight homes (under 2ach50) to balance the exhaust air from pollution sources inside. Not Everyone Needs Continuous Insulation, but Here's My FAVORITE Thing about it

Corbett Lunsford

Some people can get really freaky about 'thermal bridging', and while I do think much of the discussion about it is way out of proportion, there is a reasoned approach when it comes to continuous insulation. Here's my take on the #1 reason to consider exterior continuous insulation on any project. See how we used Rockwool to turn our home into one of the most comfortable homes in the country: https://homediagnosis.tv/episode-206-windbreakers-air-sealing-and-insulation

Tips for HVAC Quality Control Targets and Specs for Builders and Contractors

Corbett Lunsford

Controlling a home's performance is pretty simple as an idea: set targets, and verify that they were met. In reality, it's a lot more complex, which is why we need to talk about the foundations for thinking through what quality control methods you'll need to use to achieve your specific goals for the specific home where a specific family will live.

3 Rules for Kitchen Make Up Air Systems: Planning Home Ventilation that Performs

Corbett Lunsford

The 3 rules are: don't blow make up air on people, don't blow it on surfaces, and keep the circuit short.

Airtight Home Ventilation: Where to Place ERV Exhaust and Supply Grilles

Corbett Lunsford

I only recommend ERVs for very airtight homes (less than 2 ACH50), and in those cases balanced ventilation is the ONLY way to exhaust from bathrooms. More coming on that for those who are scratching their heads. If you DO need an ERV or HRV (hear the difference at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOe4lluGwCg) then where do you put the supply and exhaust ports? How many CFM should they each push and pull? Here's my simple breakdown of what you'll need to consider.

HVAC Reality Check: Are Duct Systems Dumb or Essential?

Corbett Lunsford

Just wanted to spell out why central duct systems are a central part of ANY home design. Yes, ductless mini split heat pumps are awesome. Yes, radiant flooring is comfy. Yes, lots of people use decentralized HVAC strategies around the world and are happy with them (or at least they don't know what they're missing). Duct systems can be used to filter and deliver healthy air to every room in the house- humidified/dehumidified, diluted with outdoor air, and pressure relieved for kitchen exhaust. How to Hide HVAC Grilles and Replace Your A/C Faster

Corbett Lunsford

My friends, DO NOT DO THIS. Friends don't let friends put HVAC grilles, especially the central return grille, anywhere a couch might end up backing up against it. Ceilings, great. High wall, fine. Floor, not so great but probably better than this. Learn more about HVAC performance by subscribing to our channel and joining our Patreon membership: https://Patreon.com/HomeDiagnosisTV

Welcome to Pioneer Village in Minden Nebraska, where they have one of everything. This place is a picker's wet dream. We'll stick to Wendell Turner's 1950 DIY truck conversion to a motor home, before motor homes were a manufactured product. See the awesome things he got right for performance, along with a lot of the kooky things you tend to see in unique tiny homes the world over.

Tearing a Historic Home Foundation Apart- Pouring a Passive House Concrete Slab and Shotcrete Wall

Corbett Lunsford

Our friends, Builder Matt Hoots (https://www.youtube.com/@sawhorsedesignbuild) and architect Chris Laumer-Giddens (https://www.youtube.com/@LGSquared) have made lots of progress on the 1920's Passive House Retrofit since our initial blower door test, the leakiest test I've ever seen. See and hear the details of how this is working, and what's to come down the road for this project.

Where Best to Put Ventilation Intakes? ERV, HRV, Supply and Intermittent Exhaust Vent Terminals

Corbett Lunsford

The maintenance of homes just doesn't stop, whether it's a high performance home or not. There are too many variables between family behaviors, between homes, between neighborhoods and climates that you just can't predict everything. Tweaks must be made. Here's a quick demonstration of HOW and WHY to clean the ERV or HRV outside ventilation terminals, as well as a quick modification of the insect screen on these 8" round duct hoods.
