Wild Kingdom Around Us 24/7: Microbiology of Homes with Rob Dunn

Corbett Lunsford

In one of my all-time favorite (and longest) interviews, we talk with Rob Dunn, a researcher and expert on ecology within homes and author of the amazing book 'Never Home Alone' (http://robdunnlab.com/). The conversation ranges from black mold in drywall to biofilm in plumbing to the extreme environments within our 'normal' American homes- and where we're headed.

Comparetto DIY Air Cleaner Filtration Rig

Corbett Lunsford

My friend Neil Comparetto came up with a very effective, very inexpensive way to clean air for less than $100. It's not fancy, but it works as well or better than many high-end air purifiers and filtration products 'they' are trying to sell you. The important thing is that it's a fan and a filter, which is all you should ask for in an air purifying device- nothing that 'destroys', 'eliminates', or 'sanitizes' using 'electronics', 'UV', or 'plasma'. Neil Comparetto's a great HVAC expert if you happen to be in Virginia: https://www.facebook.com/comparettocomfortsolutions/

Air Purifiers: Safe vs. Experimental

Corbett Lunsford

'Home Diagnosis' season 2 will show people the safe and potentially dangerous methods for air purification- here's our simple stance on the issue: a fan and a filter is all you need. If you’re looking at any other technology, including Ozone generation (my god, please no), UV light, electrostatic filters, or other ionization-related new gadgets, they create all kinds of funny chemical reactions that it’s almost impossible to track, predict, or prevent side effects from.

Mask Denials vs. Actual Science

Corbett Lunsford

Have you heard that face masks cannot filter something the size of a virus? Do you know how dumb that is? Would you like to know?

Viruses do not fly around by themselves- they’ll fly as part of a larger particle in the air, which you then inhale. Amazingly, it’s not just when people around you cough or sneeze that these particles are aspirated- they come out of your mouth when you breathe or laugh too.
